Employment Opportunities at the BTO

If you are interested in working for the BTO, opportunities do arise fairly regularly. However most scientific positions are offered on short-term contracts, at least initially, due to the unpredictability of funding. BTO scientific staff are recruited from universities and research institutes across the British Isles, almost all have degrees in ecology or equivalent practical experience, many have Master’s degrees and a PhD is generally required for senior posts. Not all BTO staff are birders, although many are, and those who do not actively watch birds tend to be ringers or have some other volunteer involvement in ornithology or conservation. Fieldwork experience can be an advantage. A cheerful and sociable disposition also helps, especially as most entertainment in Thetford is self-generated (although Norwich and Cambridge are both less than an hour away). See the "Explore Thetford" web site. There is a friendly working atmosphere, plenty of fresh air, wide open spaces and a small network of like-minded colleagues living locally. Mountaineers will be disappointed by the Breckland terrain, but botanists and cyclists will be in their element. Property prices in Thetford are below the average for eastern England.

Administrative and support staff are generally recruited from the local community. Scientific vacancies are usually advertised in New Scientist. Other opportunities are advertised in the Bury Free Press and other local newspapers.
