BTO New Year Bird Count

Each year we ask you to work off the Christmas pudding, or sit back in your favourite armchair and do a sponsored bird count.

We are not promoting a Bird Count this year as it is our intention to hold a Bird Count later on in 2009. However, it you have booked this into your Winter itinerary you are welcome to carry out a BTO Bird Count in aid of Bird Atlas 2007-11.

What To Do

All you have to do, over the Winter holiday period, is to approach family and friends for sponsorship, choose a location (either your garden, local area or birdwatching excursion), note which 10km square you are birdwatching in, and tick the form to report the bird species you see. Then return the form to the BTO.

In order for your record to contribute to the Atlas we need to know the two figure grid reference of the 10km you are doing the bird count in.

The easiest way to do this is to:

Register on the Bird Atlas 2007-11 webpages

Click on Add Roving Records. Here you will see a map.

Zoom in on the area you will be birdwatching in and note the Grid reference at the bottom right-hand side of the map. Eg. NZ71 is the 10km square the additional letter is the tetrad, this is also useful to know as it further refines where the birds have been seen.

If your trip is going to visit two 10km squares it is important to record which birds were seen in which square. Please print additional forms for each square.

It would also be helpful to us if you could enter the details of your New Year Bird Count online, it will save us time and valuable resources that can be devoted to further work on the Atlas.
