This tree guard seems the most unlikely nesting location, but was favoured by a Cumbrian Great Tit. The clutch survived though, hatching to these small chicks (perhaps five to six days old). It will be interesting to see if they survived through the recent bad weather.

The colour-ringed Spoonbills (left) originated in a large nesting colony in The Netherlands, the bird on the left being ringed in June 2007 at Oosterkwelder, Schiermonnikoog. It had previously been seen six times in The Netherlands (until 12 August 2007) and then on estuaries around Devon from 7 November 2007 to at least 30 March 2008. As they're asleep, the second photo shows how they get their name! If you see a colour-ringed bird, report it to the BTO via the web here.

Pomarine Skua, Cabragh, Co Tipperary
15 November 2007 (Michael Maunsell)

This bird was found some 70km inland following the massive passage of birds in late November. During the same period, a bird was also found dead trapped in a fence 50km inland in Norfolk (by the BirdTrack Organiser!)

One of the keys to identification is the double crescent seen here on the underwing (formed by white bases to the primaries and primary coverts). Also note how the feet look like they've been dipped in black paint. Both the feet and legs start off grey, with the black slowly extending upwards over a three year period.
