About
the Redwing
The Redwing is a winter visitor
to Britain and Ireland, arriving in varying numbers from breeding
grounds in Iceland and Scandinavia. Icelandic birds winter
further north and west in Britain.
Redwings eat invertebrates, with
increasing amounts of fruit and berries in autumn and winter.
Redwings may feed in woodland, turning over leaves like Blackbirds.
Redwings are nocturnal migrants
and can be heard calling after dark on autumn nights.
Redwings are nomadic and those
wintering in Britain this year might spend next winter somewhere
else entirely (blue dots on the map).
The Redwing is much smaller than
the Fieldfare and is quite a dark little thrush. Note the
pale stripe above the eye.
