Redwing

These small dark thrushes seem to have caused something of an identification challenge for casual birdwatchers, their arrival prompting phone calls to the BTO's garden bird experts.

We would normally expect to see Redwings reported from fewer than one in ten of our BTO Garden BirdWatch gardens at this time of the year but this year the figure is in excess of one in three gardens.

The BTO Garden BirdWatch results for the last few weeks (we have 14,000 Garden BirdWatchers who record their garden birds each week throughout the year) show the impact of the recent cold spell very clearly, with Redwings greatly increasing their use of gardens.

Note how the use of gardens increased during the last two weeks of 2009 as the cold weather and snow cover restricted access to the Redwings more usual feeding opportunities. Redwings are very prone to cold weather most either move on or starve.

About the Redwing

The Redwing is a winter visitor to Britain and Ireland, arriving in varying numbers from breeding grounds in Iceland and Scandinavia. Icelandic birds winter further north and west in Britain.

Redwings eat invertebrates, with increasing amounts of fruit and berries in autumn and winter. Redwings may feed in woodland, turning over leaves like Blackbirds.

Redwings are nocturnal migrants and can be heard calling after dark on autumn nights.

Redwings are nomadic and those wintering in Britain this year might spend next winter somewhere else entirely (blue dots on the map).

The Redwing is much smaller than the Fieldfare and is quite a dark little thrush. Note the pale stripe above the eye.
