Reed Bunting

The Reed Bunting is a farmland bird that makes use of rural gardens towards the end of the winter, when farmland seed supplies are at their lowest.

The BTO Garden BirdWatch records for the last few weeks show a move into gardens much earlier than usual, something that reflects the snow cover preventing access to farmland seed resources.

This increase in garden use is very pronounced, even though we are still only talking about a small number of gardens being visited by these delightful little birds. Those gardens visited are predominantly rural in nature and surrounded by farmland.

About the Reed Bunting

During the winter months, large flocks of Reed Buntings may gather together to roost in reedbeds.

Winter Reed Buntings may be missed, the characteristic black and white head pattern of the breeding males being hidden behind brown feather tips which will be gradually worn away as the winter progresses.

Reed Buntings eat seeds during the winter months, adding invertebrates to their diet during the breeding season.

Most of our Reed Buntings remain here during the winter, to be joined by very small numbers of birds from Scandinavia.
