Celebrating 100 years of bird ringing

The BTO is proud to be celebrating the Centenary of bird ringing in Britain and Ireland in 2009. Those 100 years have seen some incredible advances in our understanding of the lives of birds, from understanding migratory movements to delving into the causes behind the declines (and increases) in our bird populations.

The Scheme really began life as two separate schemes in 1909, and has a fascinating history. Read more...

But we should never rest on our laurels, and its important to remember that there are still a great number of unanswered questions out there! Alongside these questions, the modern Ringing Scheme also has a very important monitoring role, spear-headed by the Constant Effort Sites (CES) Scheme and the Retrapping Adults for Survival (RAS) Scheme.
